Flying to the finish line
In his spare time, 58-year-old lead mechanic Georges Helaouet likes to travel to faraway places, but he doesn’t rely on jet power. Ranked the best veteran cyclist in the world, Helaouet, based in Dorval, wins the John Marino Open West in 1986, a 554-mile timed race in Arizona in which he was the oldest racer. (Half the other participants didn’t finish!) His colleagues at Air Canada Express sponsored George’s expenses and helped fund his team for the Race Across America, a 3,000-mile race across the U.S. widely deemed the longest and most difficult non-stop bike race in the world.
